Who knew?
Apparently I have learned something while pursuing my English degree, which strangely enough became obvious to me while watching The Simpson’s last night!
First there was a reference to the humours which are four personality types based on four humours: blood (sanguine), yellow bile (choleric), phlegm (phlegmatic), and black bile (melancholy).
Also, an albatross (the bird of good luck) showed up, presumably to guide the ship to safety, which instead Homer of course killed and ate. So much like “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge!
I picked up on something else I’ve learned in yesterday’s episode of Family Guy, but can’t remember what it was now.
Anyway. I thought that was pretty cool, not only that these references were made in lewd cartoon shows, but also because I noticed them!
I’m such an English nerd.

I don’t watch a lot of Family Guy, but I know that The Simpson’s are always littered with literary references and pop-culture satires. So it doesn’t surprise me that even you could pick some of it out. :p

Really? I used to watch alot of Simpson’s when I was a kid but honestly, I hardly watch TV anymore. Maybe I’ll have to start watching The Simpsons more just so I can feel proud when I pick up on the references!

:-)
I’ve used the Simpsons as an educational tool for my kids more than once.
We had a pretty good discussion on plastic surgery, looks, and related social issues from the one episode where Marge accidently gets implants.

Yeah really!
I have had a number of Uni Profs say that The Simpsons were their favorite tv show because there are so many references in it. The show is really an accurate critique of our society.
Many people feel that in decades from now, people will watch the Simpsons to get an idea about our society and culture. It will provide a window into our lives at this point in time.
Yes, really! :p

That could work! Homer is an awful lot alike my Dad!

I’ve never quite been able to figure out why I feel this way, but Homer has always been my favorite.
